Sound work
Tunnel F.C is a multi-media response to the architectural soundscape of the site of Grangegorman.

The work centres around a tunnel which operated as a structure for transport and concealment of patients during the time Grangegorman was the grounds of a psychiatric hospital. The tunnel connected one part of the site to the other; the football pitch and garden grounds, a space that offered an alternative care for those within the institutional walls and towers of the hospital. These football pitches would later host the hospital’s GAA team which would win the Dublin senior hurling championships in 1980. This work is a nod to the resilience and community that these sports communities helped foster for the people who were bound inside the state’s mental health system.

Through making a sportive marching band who play DIY instruments, Tunnel F.C playfully evokes the hidden and less heard aspects of the site’s history, creating a sonic memorial to the lives of those who passed through the tunnel, and also as a celebration of collectivity as a form of care.
